Family Thinks Their Dog Died In Wildfire. Then They Return To Ruins Of House One Last Time.

Devastating wildfires have swept through areas of California, destroying nearly everything in their path including homes and businesses. The fires have been out of control and traveling so quickly that residents sometimes had only a few moments to escape their homes alive, with nothing except the clothes on their backs.

This is what happened to the Weaver family, but their situation became even more tragic. Their daughter recounted the events on Facebook: “My parents woke up with flames surrounding their house in Wikiup Bridge Way and had seconds to get out,” Beckyjean Widen said on Facebook. “In the chaos of trying to escape, my parent’s dog Izzy ran from them. My mom couldn’t chase after her without risking her own life.”

One thing that has been said over and over during this disaster is that ‘things’ can be replaced, but lives can not. This includes the lives of pets, and the Weavers had to face the grim reality that the fires had taken a beloved family member from them.

“They lost everything, but my mom was most devastated about leaving Izzy. My brother and husband were determined to try to get back to my parent’s property to see if by some miracle Izzy survived,” Widen wrote.

The Weaver’s son and son-in-law wanted to search for Lizzy, even if it just meant giving their parents closure.

“They were turned away by police officers, but if you know my brother Jack or husband, Patrick…neither one likes to be told no. They ended up hiking just under 3 miles to my parent’s property.”

They approached the still smoldering remains of the house and called her name. To their complete surprise, Izzy came bounding towards them! Somehow she had managed to survive the fire.
